Automatic Lessons
Automatic driving lessons in West London
Automatic cars are easier to learn in — no clutch, no gears, just focus on the road. Who are automatic lessons for?
Automatic lessons suit anyone who wants to get on the road with fewer moving parts to think about. They're a popular choice for nervous or first-time learners, pupils who have struggled with clutch control in a manual car, and drivers who simply want to pass as quickly and confidently as possible. Many of our automatic pupils in Richmond and Twickenham tell us that removing gear changes from the equation means they can concentrate fully on the things that matter most on test day — observation, positioning and hazard perception.

How many hours will I need?
Every learner is different, but most of our automatic pupils in South West London pass within 40–50 hours of lessons, combined with regular private practice where possible. If you're switching from manual lessons, you may need fewer hours to adjust, since many of the core driving skills — observation, positioning and hazard awareness — carry across directly. Your instructor will give you an honest, personalised estimate after your first lesson.
Frequently asked questions
Is it harder to pass in an automatic car?
No — in fact, many learners find it easier, since there's no clutch control or gear changes to manage. You can focus fully on the road, and the driving test itself is exactly the same whether you take it in a manual or an automatic car.
Can I drive a manual car if I pass my test in an automatic?
No. Passing your test in an automatic car means your licence only covers automatic vehicles. If you want to drive a manual car in future, you'll need to pass a separate manual test.
Do I need a provisional licence before booking?
Yes — you'll need your provisional driving licence before your first lesson. You can apply for one on the DVSA website, and it usually arrives within about a week.
